何时只用whether而不用if
连词whether和if都可以作“是否”解，但并非在任何情况下都可通用。下列情况只用whether，而不用if。
1.与不定式连用。
Sheifnosurewhethertostayornot.她不能确定是否留下。
Thequestionwhethertogoorstayisstill
undecided.是去还是留下来的问题仍未决定。
2.与介词连用时。
Therehasbeennonewsaboutwhethertheyhavefinishedtheir
work.他们是否已经完成了工作还是没有消息。
Itdependsonwhetherheisathome.这件事是看他在不在家。
3.在动词discuss后。
Wehaven'tdisucussedwhetherweshouldsendthestudentsto
theconference.我们还没有讨论要不要派学生去参加会议。
Wediscussedwhetherweshouldclosetheshop.我们讨论了是否应该把店关掉。
4.ornot 紧接在whether之后时。
I askedmyfatherwhetherornot I shouldbuy a
bike.我问父亲，我是否应该买辆自行车。
Maryaskedmewhetherornotsheshouldcome.玛丽问我她是否应该来。
5.引导主语从句，特别是从句置于句首时。
Whetheritisremains a question.到义是真是假，还是个问题。
Whethertheywillfinishtheworkdoesnotmattertoo
much.他们是否能完成工作关系不大。
6.引导表语从句时。
Whatwewanttoknowiswhethertheywillcome.我们想知道的是他们是否会来。
Thequestioniswhetheritwillrain.问题是天是否会下雨。
7.引导同位语从句时。
Thequestionwhetherhewillgoornothasnotbeen
decided.他是否去的问题尚未定下来。
8.引导让步状语从句时。
I willstarttomorrow, whetherheaskesmeor
not.不管他要不要我去，我明天都要动身。
Tomwillbuy a newcar, whetherhisfatherpermitshimor
not.不管汤姆的父亲是否允许，他（汤姆）一定要买辆新车。
为了进一步方便记忆，我们把上述内容可编成下面的顺口溜：
主从表从同位从，if不用whether用；
discuss和介词后，whether引导宾语从；
不定式ornot 紧跟走，whether独能显神通；
宾从如是否定句，if发挥其功用；
避免歧义要慎重，其它情况可换用。
8用if引导宾语从句如果会引起歧义，应避免使用if而用wheter。试比较：
Pleaseletmeknowifyouwanttogo.
Pleaseletmeknowwhetheryouwanttogo.
if从句可理解为宾语从句，意为“请告诉我你是否想去”；此句又可理解为条件状语从句意为“如果你想去的话，请告诉我一声”。
